Our Day in Our Words...

Today we had Wonder Time, it was really fun! I talked with one of the new teachers, Mrs. Siguerdson it was a great conversation.

We had a fun time doing Wonder Time, I played with Lego and made a boat. I was inspired to make a boat because of our boat building activity yesterday!

Today for literacy, we worked on our words our way. Next week we have a test on Friday.

In Inquiry, we wrote about our rafts. We wrote about what we found to be successful and what we could change if we built them again.

In Wonder Time, I went to the maps group and I was wish Mrs. Kinsmen. She read a book to us about people traveling across Canada. We also looked at different maps and discussed the things that we found for example, how in Ontario there is Niagara Falls!

The climbing wall was very challenging in Wonder Time, by hands are kind of red now. When the hoola hoops were added, I had to go over them because I couldn't go through them.

Reminders...

If you haven't yet, please fill out your swimming forms and bring them back to school.
Our Grade 4 students have a form that was sent home with them today about the Young Writers Conference.

Ask Me About...

Our first Wonder Time, what activities did I participate in?
If I haven't told you yet, please ask me what Wonder Time is!
Ask me how it is different from last year?
What did I feel was successful about my raft and what do I think I could improve?

Our Day in Our Words

Today we tested our rafts. They were based on the raft Brian built in "The Hatchet". Most of them were able to float and some even survived the ocean wave test!
During IGNITE some of us exchanged library books while others worked on outstanding assignments.
During gym we played tag by stealing squirrel tails.
In Math some of us solved a Star Wars math puzzle while others finished up their addition and subtraction units.
We had an afternoon break in the great weather. It was a beautiful sunny day and we all came back in really tired.
We had fun lunch today which was REALLY FUN!! During snack we had a mini-lesson on space and we learned about the different kinds of moons.

Reminders!

You should have a swimming form, please fill it out and return it.

We are finished with building our boats, please don't bring anymore materials.

Ask me about:

What are some of the different moons you can name? What special lunar event happened this past Sunday?

Our Day in Our Words...

In gym, we played volleyball but, if we wanted to we could practice our throwing and catching skills. The challenging part of the game was that if the ball was dropped, the other team would get a point!

Today in Ignite I worked on my book club assignment. I'm reading the book Georges Marvelous Medicine!

In inquiry we built our boats, I built a boat with a sail and steering wheel so Brian could steer where he wanted to go. My steering wheel was made out of cardboard and a toothpick to hold the two pieces of cardboard together!

I built a boat with cardboard, tape and plastic spoons. I predict that it will float because cardboard floats.

When I was building my boat, some of my friends shared their materials with me! It made me feel good.

In my math group, some kids got to work with our student teacher Miss Baxter. She challenged us to solve the question 112+104 and I finished it! Another exciting thing that happened today was that I finished my book club book that is called Freckle Juice.

It was a BLIZZARD outside today, it kind of looked like a snow dust devil!

Reminders!

You should have a swimming form, please fill it out and return it.
We are finished with building our boats, please don't bring anymore materials.

Ask Me About...

Everyone worked very hard today while they were building their boat, we can't wait to share plenty of interesting things about how we built them!

How did I build my boat?
Why do I think that my boat will float?
What materials did I use to make my boat?
What steps did I take when I was building my boat?

Yesterday the Red and Green color groups finished Hatchet.. ask me about how the book ended!

Tuesday January 22, 2019

Our day in our words...

In Ignite some people took the time to finish their math questions.  Others played math and spelling games.

In gym we played volleyball but we could catch the ball.  If you caught the ball the other team would not get a point, but if you didn't catch the ball, the other team who threw it would get the point.  This game helped us learn how to keep score in volleyball.

In Daily 5 all of us made sure we did words their way practice.  Some of us had book club and I drew the main character.  We used the front cover picture and description I the book to draw it.

We had math groups today a few things each group did were:
  • find a pattern of increasing numbers.
  • played race to 100.
  • subtraction and addition word problems.
We finished our plans for building our rafts for Brain in Hatchet today in Inquiry and continued to read the novel.

Reminders...

  • All materials for our raft building need to be here for tomorrow. Please remember what you need to bring!!
  • Swimming notices came home today.  Please return forms as soon as you can.  Volunteers are needed for this activity.  More information will be coming shortly.

Ask me about...

the materials I need to bring for building my raft tomorrow.

Our day in our words...

Today we did Ignite.  A few friends and I worked together to make a movie trailer.

I played with the 3D metal puzzles.  I solved it!

In gym we played volleyball.  We focussed on hitting the ball in the direction we wanted it to go.

We did Inquiry and we started planning our rafts that we will build later this week.  We have been challenged to see how Brian (from the book Hatchet) might do it.

In Daily 5 we got new word lists.  A list will be coming home today for practice like last time.

Ask me about...

what my partner and I "considered" when making our raft design.

Reminders...

Please begin practicing new word lists at home.  Our check in quiz will be on January 31 (as February 1 is a non-instructional day).

Over due books need to be returned to the Learning Commons.

Any Home reading books can also be returned and new ones chosen.

We also calculated the difference between each other. During this time, small groups were also pulled aside to learn about the expectation in the Maker Space. After that, we had a Peace Assembly that was put on by the Kindergarten Pod. It was so much fun! We ended with our Gratitude Circle and danced our was into the weekend!

- In Math groups I was working on making word problems involving addition and subtraction.   We did this with Mrs.  Danchuk.

- In Inquiry we looked at other peoples artwork and then went into groups to look at different types of buildings and homes.   We decided if we liked or disliked it.   We then had to say why.

Reminders.....

-  Tomorrow is Friday.   School is dismissed at 12:05pm.
-  Dress for the weather.

Ask me about...
Ask me about the word modern.  What does that mean?  How would you describe a 'modern' building?  Is it about design or age?

Friendly reminder.....we have learned A LOT of math games to help us review and practice subtraction and addition.  These are easy games to play at home.  Teach one of them to your parents tonight.  All you need is dice!!!

Games:

Roll to 100
1 When it is your first turn, roll the dice any number of times.
Mentally or on paper add all of the numbers rolled for all your dice rolls. Enter this as your score for Turn 1.
If you roll a 1 at any time, your turn is over. Enter 0 as your score for Turn 1.
2 When you take another turn, roll the dice any number of times.
Start with your score from the last turn and keep mentally or on paper adding on all of the numbers you roll. Do this until you stop rolling the dice. Enter your final sum as your score for this turn.
If you roll a 1 at any time, your turn is over. The score you enter for this turn is the same as your score on the previous turn.
3. The first player to score 100 or more wins the game.

Highest Sum
Each set of players has three or four dice.
Roll the dice and make a three or four digit number.
Roll again and make another three or four digit number.
Players work together to add the two problems.
The person with the largest number wins.

Lowest Difference
Each set of players has three or four dice.
Roll the dice and make a three or four digit number.
Roll again and make another three or four digit number.
Players decide which number is greater and will be on the top of a subtraction problem.
Players work together to subtract the two problems.
The person with the smallest difference wins.

Consecutive Addition
Roll a dice.

The first roll is the starting number.
Roll the dice again and add the 2 numbers.
Roll the dice again and add that roll to your previous sum.

Continue mentally adding for 5 consecutive rolls.
