Our Day in Our Words

This morning during IGNITE the kids worked towards their portions of the Peace Assembly. After IGNITE we went to the book fair to view the various offerings. Our teachers looked at good books for the classroom. After that we returned to do some creative writing and some Book Club assignments.

In the afternoon we resolved some multiplication problems and learned some new strategies for breaking down numbers into easier chunks for multiplying.

At the end of the day we received our pen pal letters from Japan. It was so exciting to see our names in Japanese!

Ask me about: My pen pal

Our day in our words...

Today was a topsy turvy Monday. We began the day by continuing our work towards our next Peace Assembly. We had gym outside and had free play with our teachers and Mr. Der. During Daily 5 some of us are in the home stretch of finishing our first novels in Book Club. We all had some time to complete some creative writing and read aloud with a friend.

At lunch we all explored the changing climate as Lake Harvie gets ready to show up for spring. Ask me about this too.

After lunch we watched a presentation by Quest theater that featured Indigenous performers. We learned about treaties, promises and the move towards reconciliation. After having time to discuss the performance as a class we returned to the gym to participate in a circle dance celebration led by an Indigenous drummer.

Ask me about...

Treaty 7 and Calgary's history with treaties.

Our Day in Our Words....

In ignite, we split up into our Peace Assembly groups. In the art group we talked about "what is the purpose of art", "what things do you need for art" and "what are we going to make for our assembly". In the MC group we decided who was going to read what.

In P.E we played a game called Pole Ball, this game helped us with our throwing accuracy.

Today in Mr. Kai's math group we made array buildings using construction paper. My array was 6x4. In, Ms. Merilovich's math group, we made arrays using manipulatives

Today in Mr. Neily's Inquiry group, we started to write our songs. I am writing a song about Hope. In Mrs. Danchuk's inquiry group we had a special guest, Leanne, who was from City Hall. She talked about how we can made things more accessible for everyone. We got to walk around the school using canes, blindfolds and googles. In Mr. Campbell's group some of us were finishing up building our houses.

Our Day in Our Words.....

In the morning, we had a Pod meeting and we decided our topic two choices we wanted to participate in the assembly. Some of the choices were: movie, songs, movement (skit or play), MC's, art and writing.

In P.E, Ms. M taught us a game that helped us practice our aim with dodge balls and it was like an obstacle course.

In French/Snack, we learned how to count to 50. After French we had Daily 5, and some of us were reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Mr.Kai's math group worked on arrays and trying to find the answer using multiplication. Then we used the blocks to make our own arrays.

Mr. Campbell's math group worked on multiplication questions. We were drawing arrays using fruit!

In Mr.Neily's group we listened to hopeful songs, we played a rap rhyming game and then we started writing our songs!

Our Day in Our Words.....

Today we had a Pod meeting about our assembly on April, 12th. We have decided to plan the whole assembly on our own!

In Daily 5, I wrote my story called "The Caveman". It is about someone who gets a math equation and then he answered it correctly and he got $1, 000, 000.00. Also in Daily 5, in round 3, we finally got our new WTW words.

In French today, we were learning about emotions, phrases and how to count to 20.

In CCT my group made a rough copy of the moral we are going to make.

In Inquiry my group started making our rough copy proposal about what we are going to build in our community, and how we are going to make sure everyone gets to participate.

Our day in our words...

Today was our last day of swimming.  We are so proud of what incredible ambassadors you were at the pool.  Well done!  We saw such progress in everyone's skills.  It was great to watch you jump off diving boards and swing on the rope as a celebration!

Ask me about...

what I did for Wondertime today.  Let me tell you about why I chose this activity and what I discovered while I was there.

Reminders...

  • Please return your Read-a-Thon forms.

Our day in our words...

We had swimming in the morning.  Some of us treaded water for one minute!  Some others went to the bottom of the diving tank, got a ring and then came back.  We had fun lunch and it was delicious!  We did multiplication in math.  We played a game where we had to find the answer to the questions on the papers.  Today in Inquiry we got a new member in our group and we started building a house that we will add a shed onto.  Mr. Campbell had hair today as we celebrated 'Dress as Your Favorite Book Character".  He was dressed as Brian from Hatchet.  We also had many Harry Potter costumes.

Ask me about...

what I am thinking about proposing to create in our community design.  We have been thinking and carefully about community design in connection to human rights.  Our research has helped inform what we might propose when we begin to writing our proposals next week.

Reminders...

  • Last day of swimming tomorrow.  Thanks so much for a great week and being so amazing on the bus, at the pool and while changing!  Thank you also to our volunteers!  You have been incredible.

Our day in our words...

This morning we did a round of Daily 5.  I read Plants vs. Zombies.  It is a graphic novel.  I am writing a novel about a stranded dog.

In swimming, my favorite part was when we played a game and the instructor asked if we liked different foods.  If we liked that food, we would jump in.  My favourite part was when we did the standing dives because I touched the bottom and got the ring!  I almost sat criss-crossed at the bottom.

In Math we went around the school and looked for different arrays.  An array is like a square or rectangle that have different squares in them.  When you multiply the number of rows by the number of columns, that's how many squares are in the shape.

Ask me About...

what arrays I can find in our house.  Can you challenge yourself to write an addition sentence to go with it?  Can you challenge yourself to write a multiplication sentence too?  We will be working with arrays a lot over the coming days and weeks as we begin to explore multiplication more closely.

Reminders...

Tomorrow is 'Dress As Your Favourite Book Character Day'.  We challenge you to create your costume with things you already have at home.  Please remember that there is no face paint as we are swimming and elaborate costumes may be put on after we return form swimming.

Swimming tomorrow!  Bring your towels and suits.

Tuesday March 5, 2019

Our day in our words...

  • This morning we did read to self and swimming.  In one group we learned how to dive into the pool by doing a roll into the water.  Another group did 5 laps of the dive tank.  In another group they did a couple of lengths of breast stroke.
  • We have been awesome at getting ready for the pool and to go home.  Our teachers think we are rock stars!
  • Today we had DEAR time throughout the day.  One of the craziest places someone had to Drop Everything and Read was in the bathroom!
  • In Math we did a pre-assessment for multiplication.  This will help our teachers know what we already know about this concept.  When we finished we got to finish our symmetry mandalas or play Circles and Stars or Multiplication Kaboom.
  • Today in inquiry we read books about our topics.  The research group read about how our community could have clean air, water and make sure everyone has food.  Another group explored 2 songs and thought about the rubric which will be used for assessing the songs we will be making.  In Mr. Kai's group we began creating a storyboard for our video.

Reminders...

Swimming continues all week!  Please remember to bring your suits and towels.

Ask me about...

my favourite part of the day.

Our Day in Our Words...
This morning we went swimming.  We learned some new things. In my group the deal was that if you put one hand on the wall or maybe two you got to do whatever you wanted! I went underwater and had a breath holding competition.

After swimming we had a small round of Daily 5. Next, we cleaned up and had lunch. Today, we had our first day of indoor soccer club with Mr. Campbell as our coach. There were four different team colours: black, green, orange and yellow.

Today we had an assembly about the Read-a-thon.  We got to listen to another student teacher read everyone a story in the gym. This week we will have different challenges to show our love of reading. Tomorrow our challenge is: DROP EVERYTHING AND READ. So, we will have to carry a book everywhere with us.

Ask Me About...
What book did we read in our assembly?
How did my swimming lesson go?
Ask me about my Read-a-thon pledge form.

Reminders..
We have swimming all week, remember to bring your swimsuit and towel!
We are still in need of parent volunteers to help with swimming.  Here is the link:
We will be bringing home our Read-a-thon pledge forms today.  Please help me find pledges so that we can raise money to buy books for our Learning Commons.
