Our Day in Our Words

Today we spent the whole day without the Grade 4's :(

Although we missed them (Farewell Celebration at River Edge) we had a great day getting to know each other as future grade 4's and next year's leaders. We put together some nice surprises for our outgoing peers and had a lot of fun in PE playing "Not in My Yard".  We finished up glazing some of our clay creations and listened to a fun Math story at the end of the day.

School's winding down and we can't wait for summer but we are really enjoying our last few days at school with our Grade 4 Hope Pod pals.

Reminders:

Tomorrow is Coulee Fest for Grade 4's so please remember to help me pack for any weather and bring water!!

Tomorrow night is also the Film Festival! It starts at 6:15 and runs until 7:45pm. Bring your own popcorn!!

Our day in our words...

We were fortunate to have a presentation today from Olympian, Catriona Le May Doan, today.  She spoke to us about her dream of becoming an Olympian, the hard work and belief in herself to achieve the goal as well as her experiences as an Olympic athlete.  She gave us many great messages to take away as we goal set and overcome challenges.  In math we have begun to explore perimeter.  We are using measurement to justify whether we would rather 5 laps of the gym or 1 lap of our field.  In inquiry we continued to work on our symbolic drawings of the animal we researched.  They are looking fabulous!

Ask me about...

what message I took away from Catriona Le May Doan's presentation today.

Monday June 3

Our day in our words...

We began the day discussing the upcoming Film Fest and beginning to think about the style of film we would like to create.  We then continued reading Silverwing and carefully considered Shade's characteristics.  We were challenged to think about how characteristics can sometimes help a character but also can hinder them too. This is the response we are currently working on - providing examples of how Shade's characteristics help or hinder hi in his journey.  This afternoon we walked to Tuscany to watch the Opera they worked with Calgary Opera, artists in residents and Blackfoot Elders.  It was incredible and we were fortunate to be invited. There were many connections to our work this year as well.

Ask me about...

what connections I made between the opera at Tuscany and our Inquiry work this year.

Our day in our words...

We had a busy day today!  We worked on our puppets with Ms. Wendy and thought about how our puppet should move and speak.  We also had our final presentation from the Just Like me Me program.  We have been working hard in our math groups exploring 'equal groupings' as we explore division and finally, we researched our animal's adaptations which help it live in its environment.

Ask me about...

how can we use 'person first' language when referring to people.  As well, how can we help those that live with disabilities every day.

Reminders...

Our day in our words...

We have begun to 'map' Shade's journey from our novel study, Silverwing.  Visualizing and summarizing are 2 of the strategies we use to understand what we read.  We continued our work in math exploring how division and multiplication are related.  In inquiry we are delving deeper into our research of our animals.  We learned about animal adaptations and will be adding these to our scientific diagrams soon.

Ask me about...

animal adaptations.  Today we learned what an adaptation is and are beginning to explore what adaptations our research animals have.

Reminders...

  • Today your Spring school photos came home.  Orders due May 15.

Our day in our words...

Today we continued our Words Their Way work.  Today during our blind sorts, we determined the words that we need to spend extra time reviewing at home and in future practice times at school.  We played scooter soccer (scotter) in gym.  We reviewed numbers in French today and began to notice a pattern.  In Math we did some review.  Some of us reviewed area while others reviewed subtraction.  Finally in Inquiry, we began to create scientific diagrams of the animal we have been researching.  We used our keen sense of observation to draw 'what we see' as opposed to 'what we THINK we see'.

Ask me about...

what I noticed about my animal today that I have never noticed before.

Our day in our words...

We had the opportunity to participate in the program, Just Like You, that taught us about different disabilities that others live with.  These included sensory, physical and hidden disabilities.  We also came to understand what it might feel like to live with these disabilities through a variety of activities.  In math we continued to explore area using a variety of materials to help us measure rectangles and squares.  In Inquiry we continued our research on animals and continued to work on our puppets in preparation for our work with our artist-in-residence.

Ask me about...

What I learned in our presentation today.  What is your greatest 'take away' and how will you live differently now that you have had this experience?

Reminders...

  • Please remember to be working on your word lists at home that you received this week.
